Surfing into the New Year

2020 is fast approaching and many may be taking this time before the New Year to reflect on the past year. With Christmas being not only an important family holiday, but also our son’s birthday, this time of the year is a big time for our family to look back on what we’ve done and how we’ve grown in 2019.

Reflection is an important activity in all facets of life. Take time to do some self-reflection throughout the year- are you where you want to be, are you happy, what can you do to be better? You can also reflect on growth, personal or professional. Review your personal relationships and decide if you should change something to make your connections stronger and more resilient. Are you happy with who you surround yourself with, do your friends bring you joy, should you make a change to be more present in the moment? These are all questions and thoughts that you don’t have to wait to have only once a year; you can revisit these things throughout the year and alter your mindset at any time. It’s a good way to recharge and reset.

During this time, you may come up with things you want to do to grow personally and/or professionally or you may not find anything you want to change in those areas of your life and that’s okay too. Maybe you want to exercise more this year or kick an unhealthy habit, be better organized & volunteer your time for a good cause (these are some of my personal resolutions for a better me in 2020. Maybe you just want to take more time to enjoy a hobby of yours. Maybe that hobby is surfing ? and maybe I have some suggestions on things you can do to feel more surf stoke this upcoming year. Check out my list of resolutions you can make to put yourself out in the ocean more and live for the moment:

  • Surf 52 times this year. Yes, okay- it seems like a daunting number, but this would be once a week for a year. Once a week to do something you love for an hour or two is nothing compared to the amount of time we spend doing things we don’t love.

  • Make time for post surf hang-out. I know how it is, you take some time to go for a surf, but you have SO much to do after. Groceries, cleaning, cooking, grown up stuff.. Well maybe once in a while, reschedule some of your chores to hang with your buddies post-sesh. It’ll be good for your soul ?

  • Book a surf holiday. Have you ever wanted to surf the coast opposite of your home coast, or check out the waves in the Outer Banks? Maybe you’ve always wanted to surf in another country or continent. Is 2020 your year? I say YES!!!!!! Book the trip you’ve always wanted to take or book a day trip for a smaller budget.

  • Make surfing a family affair. If you go to the beach with your family and you’re the only one out in the waves, maybe consider teaching them how to surf. If you’re not comfortable with your teaching skills, look into gifting them with some lessons. Everyone will appreciate the experience and it will be just another thing to bond and love each other over.

I hope you’re feeling extra inspired after reading this. I know I’m ready to start 2020 by living in the moment, appreciating my family every day and being grateful for every experience that will come my way. Happy New Year from the Flohana family!
